Ronaldo's Meeting With Real's Fitness Coach

With Real Madrid responding to Manchester United's formal complaint to Fifa about their conduct regarding Cristiano Ronaldo by insisting United can have no evidence of any wrong-doing, The Sun has now muddied the waters.

The newspaper carries a report backed by what it describes as "dramatic pictures" claiming that Ronaldo recently met a member of the Madrid backroom staff in Rome.

It describes Walter Di Salvo, Real's fitness coach, as the man who "compiled a detailed dossier on the Manchester United star which he handed to Real Madrid."

And it described the photographs as something Madrid had claimed yesterday couldn't possibly exist.

The newspaper reports that Di Salvo worked with Ronaldo for three seasons at Old Trafford, "where they formed a strong bond."

It adds that, "Sources close to Ronaldo insisted at the time it was a chance meeting as the Portugal winger took a two-day break in the Italian capital.

"Yet the full picture only now begins to emerge because we can reveal Di Salvo, who controversially left United last summer to join Madrid, gave the Spanish giants a FULL report on Ronaldo.

"In it were all his observations of the United superstar during their time together at Old Trafford — precious information about his lifestyle, fitness, diet and personality."

According to The Sun, Real Madrid's technical director, Miguel Angel Portugal, sporting director Pedja Mijatovic and board member Carlos Bucero asked Di Salvo to compile the detailed assessment on every aspect of Ronaldo.

And it claims that in his report Di Salvo hailed Ronaldo as the “perfect professional,” describing him as a player dedicated to football who works hard in training and takes care about what he eats.

The Sun claims Italian Di Salvo left United for Madrid in acrimonious circumstances, despite having been described by manager Sir Alex Ferguson as the “secret weapon” behind United’s 2006-07 Premier League title triumph.

The paper also claims that Ferguson's assistant, Carlos Queiroz - once team coach at the Bernabeu - "felt betrayed when his close pal walked out and headed to Madrid. Queiroz even launched a furious attack on the fitness coach and has not spoken to him since."

While it seems Ronaldo and Di Salvo remain close friends, their meeting in Rome is not in itself evidence of any "tapping up" of the player by Madrid.

Last week the Sun reported that Madrid president Calderon admitted to a friend: “We’ve tied things up with the kid. Everything’s done with Cristiano. The only thing that remains is for him to convince Manchester to sell.”
