Is David Beckham really ready to leave LA for Europe again?

By Vanessa Keller October 05, 2011

Beckham has options. Beckham could make a European return but to where?

The reports are starting to get louder, and European football fans are getting just a tad excited at the prospect of David Beckham making his long awaited return to the continent after his contract with LA Galaxy runs out.

Clubs are admitting and revealing left right and centre that they’re interested in the star, and the England international will certainly be spoiled for choice if he does decide to leave America next year.

While Beckham’s contract, which he signed in 2007, runs until November, he had the option to leave three years into the deal, and opted to stay in Los Angeles.

But with the Olympics coming up at the end of the season, and Beckham claiming that he’d like to be considered for selection for the GB Team, a European side might be more suited to him to continue to ply his trade.

QPR have emerged as a possible English destination for Beckham, with new owner Tony Fernandes claiming the superstar has ‘always been in my thoughts’.

QPR have emerged as a possible English destination for Beckham, with new owner Tony Fernandes claiming the superstar has ‘always been in my thoughts’.

Vice-president Amit Bhatia admitted that he doesn’t think that Beckham would go to a club of Rangers’ caliber though, a major stumbling block.

"Would we like to have him? Most certainly," Bhatia said. “Have Tony and I discussed it? Yes.

"I am just not sure it's a real possibility. We would like to sign people of Beckham's calibre. I am just not certain Beckham would choose to come to us as a newly-promoted side.

"If he came to London, maybe he'd choose a bigger club like Spurs."

Harry Redknapp also weighed into talks of a move for Beckham, saying he’d welcome the midfielder with open arms if he wanted to return to Tottenham, after training there at the start of the year during the MLS off-season.

And Paris Saint-Germain are also apparently hoping to bring the star to France, with the newly cashed-up club offering to pay wages that Tottenham and QPR couldn’t compete with.

A lot of Beckham’s next destination will come down to his motivations over the last years of his career; does he want to leave a legacy at a particular club? Or does he want to work towards being selected for the GB team in the 2012 Olympics?

The fact that Beckham is now 36-years-old shows just how much marketing power he still has in the global market to be getting this much attention over his next move.

Should he want to be a contender for the Olympics, Tottenham would surely seem a good destination to get to maximum match fitness, and after coming so close to signing with Spurs at the start of the year, and sharing a history with the club from his youth days, Beckham could decide that as much as he doesn’t want to play against Manchester United, he wants that gold medal a little more.

QPR would be a club that will let Beckham have complete free reign; they will make every games all about him, and if Beckham’s aim is to be revered and grow his devoted fan base even bigger, then either could suit his needs.

But Paris Saint Germain have the money card, and a life in glamorous Paris won’t be too shabby for Beckham’s wife Victoria.

Either way, Beckham looks set to leave America, and the transfer rumours will be rife over where his future lies. My bet is he’ll end up at Tottenham, what’s yours?
