Ronaldo stuns City

Manchester City suffered late heartbreak at the Bernabeu as Real Madrid scored twice in the last three minutes to snatch a 3-2 win in a thrilling Champions League Group D opener.

City looked poised to leave with all three points after Aleksandar Kolarov's free-kick found its way into the net on 85 but Karim Benzema levelled seconds later and Cristiano Ronaldo's dipping strike eluded Joe Hart in a frantic finale.

Ronaldo was in ominous form early on, having a low shot tipped wide by Hart before his whipped cross was headed straight at the City keeper by an unmarked Gonzalo Higuain.

Hart foiled Higuain in a one-on-one, and Ronaldo's deflected follow-up was volleyed over by Sami Khedira before Higuain missed the target with a far-post volley.

The onslaught continued after the break, Angel Di Maria having an effort deflected wide and Marcelo twice shaving the woodwork.

But City took the lead on 69 when the immense Yaya Toure powered forward and played a perfect pass for Edin Dzeko, who slotted past Iker Casillas.

Real's response took only seven minutes as Vincent Kompany failed to close down Marcelo, who curled a delightful shot beyond Hart.

Hart dealt with efforts from Xavi Alonso and Luka Modric, while Dzeko failed to connect with a Carlos Tevez cross.

But on 85 Kolarov's floated free-kick from the right evaded everyone in a crowded box and crept past Casillas.

Real took barely a minute to level, Benzema finding the bottom corner with a cultured turn-and-shot from the edge of the box.

And as the referee checked his watch, Ronaldo breezed past Pablo Zabaleta and unleashed a powerful drive that dipped under Hart to spark Jose Mourinho's frenzied celebrations.
