Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish has sent sniggers through the world of football by likening Emile Heskey to German legend Franz Beckenbauer.
New role: Is goal-shy Heskey the new Beckenbauer?
The former Birmingham manager has revealed he’s be trialling the lumbering forward out in defence, and it seems the 33-year-old has excelled in the unfamiliar role.
‘We now know what Emile can do, he can play in any position,’ said McLeish.
‘I could even play him at the back without any fears.
‘We played him at centre-back last week and he was spraying the ball about the whole pitch as if I was watching Franz Beckenbauer. ‘Emile is a brilliant, all-round player, he understands the game and we need him in the squad.’ Heskey has lost his place in the Villa attack due to the red-hot form of Gabby Agbonlahor, who is striking up a dangerous partnership with Darren Bent, so it seems the former England international may have no choice but to compete with Richard Dunne and James Collins for a place at the back.
