Chelsea FC target Theo Walcott to follow Robin van Persie out of Arsenal FC?

Robin van Persie's announcement that he plans to leave Arsenal could spark a player exodus at the club - with Theo Walcott another big name whose contract expires next year.

Van Persie is out of contract at the end of next season and clubs are lining up to make their moves to sign him after he confirmed he has no plans to sign a new deal at Arsenal.

The Gunners now have a decision to make regarding their skipper as they are aware refusing to sell him this summer means they will lose him for nothing in twelve months time.

But Arsenal will fear that following Van Persie's announcement, England international Walcott may follow his captain's lead and look to secure a move away from Emirates Stadium.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs in recent weeks and prior to Van Persie's bombshell, the Sunday Mirror reported that both Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are ready to make their move to sign the forward.

Back in April, Goal.com had reported that Walcott, who is currently on a £65,000-a-week deal at Arsenal, was wanting a new £100,000-a-week contract.

The Gunners are believed to be unwilling to offer him more than £80,000.

Walcott, who in recent days has also been linked with Liverpool and Tottenham, knows that his position will be strengthened the longer his future remains unresolved, and Arsenal are known to be keen to avoid a repeat of the Samir Nasri saga from last summer.

According to last Sunday's report, some Arsenal officials are keen on cashing in on Walcott and could be tempted by a bid of around £15million to avoid losing him for free. Whether that stance will change as a result of Van Persie's decision to quit the club remains to be seen.
