Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher will not be fit to start the season.
Fletcher has not played since December after United confirmed a chronic bowel complaint had plagued the Scotland international since the previous season.
Ferguson said United would give Fletcher "all the time he needs", but there are now concerns about the 28-year-old's long-term prospects.
"He has not started training with us," said Ferguson. "He has obviously got great challenges ahead.
"We are happy to be patient but he won't be starting the season.
"It is unfortunate because he is such a magnificent professional and such a nice lad. If it doesn't work for him, he knows he has a position at the club anyway."
