Last week FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce described the Uruguayan’s theatrical fall against Stoke as
“nothing less than cheating” before going on to describe diving as a “cancer” in the game.
While those words are quite strong, Boyce was reflecting the view of many that diving is now getting out of hand and should be stamped out.
However, Suarez, seen as chief culprit of the malign menace, doesn’t care what Boyce or anyone else thinks.
“This guy (Boyce), I’ve no idea who he is,” the Liverpool striker said. “I don’t know why he has been talking about me. He certainly can’t be well-known and he wants to get publicity.
“Let him carry on talking. My job is to play football and to try to do so in the best way possible. What he has said does not affect me. I am not interested in what he has to say. It’s been important to have the support of the Uruguayan FA and the people.”
Suarez rarely seems to be out the news these days, and hardly ever in a positive light. Last season he was making headlines once again for all the wrong reasons as he was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra and banned for eight games.
And he alluded to that sorry episode when he claimed he isn’t bothered by what people say or think about him - so long as he keeps performing well for both club and country.
“I have lived through a lot in the past year, with people saying things about me, but I have continued playing and proving my job is what happens on the pitch,” he added.
Doubtless bolstering his stance is his home FA who have jumped to Suarez’s defence. Sebastian Bauza and Anibal de Olivera of the AUF have written to FIFA complaining about Boyce’s comments and for mentioning their player in the context of diving.
“Deliberately ignoring his position and role, Mr Boyce has referred specifically to a football player, encouraging and provoking hostility towards him,” the letter to the game’s governing body stated.
