Vela expects a Mexico recall in the New Year

Following a good string of performances in Spain during 2012, the Mexican forward is still highly regarded by the national team coaching staff.

Carlos Vela caused controversy in his native Mexico, when he rejected the chance to represent the national team at the 2012 London Olympics. Whilst Mexico went on to win the tournament, Vela missed out on the opportunity of a gold medal.

Bot the Mexican press and those responsible for squad selections, now seem happy to let bygones be bygones.

Whilst there has been speculation in the Mexican media that Mexican national coach José Manuel de la Torre (El Chepo) still holds a grudge, Selections Director Héctor González Iñarritu, suggests otherwise.

“Obviously we’re following his progress, because we’re not stupid. Said Iñarritu, adding that “if El Chepò feels we should call him up, then we will.”

Of Vela’s refusal to participate in the Olympic tournament, Iñarritu said: “I have a good relationship with him and if he’d been my son, I would have advised him to go to the Olympics, but that’s a personal matter.” In conclusion he added: “I understand his decision and the door is open to everyone, but the coaching staff will decide if he comes or not.”

Carlos Vela has 33 caps and 8 goals for the Mexican national team. His form during 2012 with Real Sociedad has been impressive, which suggests he’ll be welcomed back into a prominent role for his country.
