David Beckham is considering the offer of a further 12 months with LA Galaxy as he enters the final days of his five-year contract in Major League Soccer.
Although Paris Saint-Germain remain favourites to sign the former England captain, Beckham is understood to be open to another year in the United States and has yet to finalise a decision on whether to return to Europe or commit to a sixth season in the MLS.
The 36 year-old’s £4.2 million-a-year contract with the Galaxy expires on Dec 31, but senior figures within MLS and Tim Leiweke, president of Galaxy's owners AEG, are determined to persuade Beckham to continue his career in the States.Despite only winning his first piece of silverware with the Galaxy last month following the club’s MLS Cup success against Houston Dynamo, Beckham’s five-year stint in California has dramatically raised global recognition of the sport in the United States.While Thierry Henry’s move to New York Red Bulls has bolstered the reputation of MLS, Beckham’s presence remains its driving force.The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder has rejected offers from Brazil, the Middle East and Italy in recent weeks and sources close to the player have made it clear that he is considering just two options – another year in Los Angeles or an 18-month contract at PSG.PSG, owned by the Qatari royal family, are prepared to pay Beckham in the region of £700,000-a-month to play in Ligue 1, but the pay deal being offered has led to criticism in France.Jean-Marc Ayrault, an MP for the opposition Socialist Party, said: “I’m fed up with these sky-high salaries, and it’s not just in football.“The Socialists are proposing a law that would put in place a maximum salary and end these unbelievable pay deals.”
