United are thought to be keen on bringing in a midfielder next month as Ferguson looks to replace Paul Scholes, who retired at the end of last season, and also looks to strengthen his squad after this week seeing Darren Fletcher take an extended break from the game with ulcerative colitis.
Fletcher has joined Nemanja Vidic, who is ruled out for the season, on the sidelines, along with Anderson, Javier Hernandez and Tom Cleverly.
But the United boss insists he won't panic buy when the transfer window reopens.
When asked if there would be new arrivals in January, Ferguson said: "Not necessarily. I don't know why people keep going on about it.
"[I won't buy] unless someone appears we have always been interested in appears, but there isn't."
Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric has been on United's radar for some time, as has Borussia Dortmund youngster Mario Goetze, while the club have been linked with Wesley Sneijder of Inter Milan throughout the year.
Spurs insist Modric is not for sale and although reports in Italy recently have suggested Sneijder could move to Manchester providing Inter's valuation is met, it is unclear whether United are still keen on a deal given the Netherlands international's recent injuries and drop in form.
Roma's Daniele De Rossi is also believed to be a target for the Red Devils, while Everton's Jack Rodwell has been of interest to the reigning Premier League champions.
