FC Barcelona target Gareth Bale wants Champions League football

Gareth Bale's agent has admitted it is a "problem" that Tottenham have not qualified for next season's Champions League - but insists he has not held talks with Barcelona.

Bale recently admitted he could consider his future this summer should Spurs fail to qualify for Europe's elite competition, and has previously stated he is keen on playing in Spain at some point in the future.

But agent Jonathan Barnett believes Tottenham's asking price of £40million for the Wales international is "too expensive" for the Catalans, who he believes will instead look to complete a deal for Valencia's Jordi Alba.

"I think it's too expensive for the club," he admitted to Sport.

"To my knowledge, the club [Barcelona] has not made any offer for him.

"If interested, they would have to put money on the table and then start talking. But it seems that the club is working on the signing of Jordi Alba, a cheaper option."

Of the lack of Champions League football on offer at White Hart Lane, Barnett added: "Yes, it is clear that this is a problem.

"The big European clubs already know how much it would take to do the operation and therefore if you are interested you know what kind of offer has to be put on the table."

Manchester City are also keen on signing the 22-year-old.
