Harry Redknapp leaves Tottenham

Tottenham have confirmed Harry Redknapp has quit his post as manager following days of speculation about his future.

The 65-year-old had reportedly not seen eye-to-eye with chairman Daniel Levy on numerous issues including the former's contract extension and the transfer budget for the summer.

Redknapp, whose deal with the club ran until 2013, wanted another four years - something that Levy wasn't too keen on, especially after Spurs' failure to qualify for the Champions League. They finished fourth, but couldn't make it to qualification due to sixth-place Chelsea's European triumph. 

Part of the reason for the club's late-season meltdown was thought to be Redknapp's links with the vacant England job after Fabio Capello left - and that unsettles Tottenham as they relinquished their third place to neighbours Arsenal despite having led them by 10 points in February.

In comments quoted on the club's official website, Redknapp said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Spurs and am proud of my achievements. I have had a fantastic four years with the Club, at times the football has been breathtaking. I am sad to be leaving but wish to thank the players, staff and fans for their terrific support during my time there."

Levy also praised Redknapp's contributions to the club. The manager took over from Juande Ramos, under whom Tottenham had two points from their opening eight games in the beginning of the 2008-09 season, and took them all the way to the Champions League quarter-finals in 2010-11.

"This is not a decision the Board and I have taken lightly," said Levy. 

"Harry arrived at the Club at a time when his experience and approach was exactly what was needed. This decision in no way detracts from the excellent work Harry has done during his time with the Club and I should like to thank him for his achievements and contribution. Harry will always be welcome at the Lane."

Redknapp took charge of Tottenham in October 2008 following the sacking of Juande Ramos, with the club having taken just two points from their first eight games.

Redknapp led them to an eighth-place finish and an appearance in the League Cup final, which they lost to Manchester United.

In his first full season in charge, he guided Spurs to fourth position taking them into the Champions League for the first time.

Spurs played some exhilarating football on their way to the quarter-finals, before being knocked out by Real Madrid.

Since then Redknapp has twice failed to secure Champions League football at White Hart Lane, albeit with a touch of misfortune this season as Chelsea snatched the last available place away from them with their win over Bayern.

That capped a dramatic season for Redknapp, who underwent a heart procedure in November, was cleared of tax evasion in February and missed out on the England job in May.

March 1, 2009 - Guides Spurs to Carling Cup final in his first season in charge but his side lose to Manchester United on a penalty shoot-out.

May 5, 2010 - Secures top-four Premier League finish and place in Champions League qualifying round with 1-0 win at Manchester City. Peter Crouch scores the only goal at the Etihad Stadium.

November 2, 2010 - Spurs stun Inter Milan 3-1 at White Hart Lane in the outstanding performance of a Champions League campaign that takes them all the way to the quarter-finals.

November 20, 2010 - Spurs come from two goals down to beat north London rivals Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates. Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart cancel out efforts from Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh before Younes Kaboul nods in a late winner.

Lows:

April 11, 2010 - Spurs are beaten 2-0 in FA Cup semi-final by Redknapp's previous club Portsmouth at Wembley.

April 5, 2011 - A fine Champions League run ends in emphatic fashion as Spurs lose 5-0 on aggregate to Real Madrid. The tie was effectively over after the first leg, which ends 4-0 to the Spanish club.

May, 2011 - Spurs finish fifth in the Premier League, missing out on another season of Champions League football.

February 26, 2012 - Tottenham squander a two-goal lead to lose 5-2 at Arsenal. Louis Saha and Emmanuel Adebayor's penalty put them in charge within 34 minutes but Theo Walcott's double helps cap a spectacular comeback from the Gunners.

May 19, 2012 - Chelsea's penalty shoot-out win over Bayern Munich means they claim England's fourth Champions League place for next season. Spurs, who finish fourth in the Barclays Premier League, are relegated to the Europa League.
