Valencia wants Raúl Albiol back for next season. In fact, the Mestalla-based club has already contacted the player to ascertain his willingness to return. Both parties have spoken in the last week and his move back appears to be on track.
Albiol knows the club well, fits the profile and after five years at Madrid, during which he's been unable to cement a place in its starting XI, it's time for a change. Valencia's coaches considered bringing him back to the Mestalla on a number of occasions last season, but it was too soon.
Now, after talking directly with the player, they're totally convinced. Valencia is going to make its move and has the means to do so.
Even the contact extension to 2016-17 that the centre-back recently signed with Real Madrid doesn't appear to be an obstacle. Varane’s progress in the first team has permanently pushed Albiol down the pecking order and he seems tired of waiting.
Valencia laid its cards clearly out on the table during its chat with the footballer. Albiol has given the green light to a return and now the club needs to negotiate with Real Madrid in order to strike a deal.
No details have been discussed with the player, not even the potential length of his contract, but the club is very willing and Albiol will fill an important void that will be left in the dressing room at the end of the season.
