Rooney: We're The Best In The World

United edged out Chelsea in the Premier League race before downing the Blues via penalty shootout in the Champions League final to claim a memorable Double. The twin triumphs firmly re-established United as the cream of the English crop after a few years of London dominance, and pulled them within sight of a long-standing target. For a pair of successful title defences would take Sir Alex Ferguson’s side one huge step toward superseding Liverpool as England’s most successful club. A league trophy would draw the Old Trafford crew level with their rivals’ tally of 18 championships, while continential glory would put them one shy of the Merseyside outfit’s haul of five European Cups. United must certainly be favoured to claim their third straight Premier League crown, despite the uncertainty surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the club. Winning back-to-back Champions League titles, however, would be a truly heroic accomplishment. The Red Devils most definitely possess the belief to achieve such a success, though, as Rooney insisted the United squad are intent on establishing themselves as not only the best in England, nor merely as the finest in Europe – but as the greatest on the planet. “After our success last year there will be high expectations but we’ve got a good enough squad and hopefully we can emulate last season,” the 22-year-old said in The Sun. “Of course winning trophies brings you confidence and we’re a confident team anyway. But it’s given us that bit extra and belief that we’re the best in the world. “Hopefully we can prove that again this season.”
