Ivanovic loses appeal

Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic will serve a three-match ban after losing his appeal against an FA charge of violent conduct.

The 28-year-old Serbian was caught on video appearing to punch Wigan's Shaun Maloney off the ball during Saturday's 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

Referee Mike Jones confirmed he and his assistants did not witness the incident, giving the FA the green light take retrospective action.

Ivanovic contested the charge, denying any violent intent, but an FA regulatory commission met on Thursday and dismissed his argument.

He will now miss Chelsea's FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham on Sunday and Premier League matches against Arsenal and QPR.

A Chelsea statement read: "Chelsea Football Club is disappointed the FA Regulatory Commission today (Thursday) found Branislav Ivanovic guilty of violent conduct in Saturday's Premier League match against Wigan.

"Chelsea FC does not believe the incident was violent. We note that the FA did not deem our appeal frivolous and it therefore had merit."
