Real Madrid close on title

Real Madrid moved within touching distance of the La Liga title as Karim Benzema bagged a double in a 3-0 win over Sevilla.

Jose Mourinho's men have now moved 10 points clear at the top of the table and they will be handed the trophy if Barcelona lose against Rayo Vallecano later today.

Sevilla were denied an early opener when Federico Fazio's effort was chalked off for a foul, while the defender then nodded wide, but Real seized the lead shortly afterwards as Cristiano Ronaldo (19) cut inside and curled into the corner.

This lead should have been shortlived as Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo both failed to score after bursting clear and Ronaldo nearly punished this wastefulness as his free-kick from inside the area stuck the post.

This was a brief let-off for Sevilla as they conceded a soft second when sloppy defending allowed Benzema (48) to turn the ball home, and the Frenchman soon doubled his tally with a diving header from Sergio Ramos' cross.

Ronaldo appealed in vain for a penalty when Juan Torres Ruiz sent him tumbling, but not even a rash charge from Iker Casillas could spoil Real's day as Navas failed to find the unguarded net.
