United have long been linked with a move for Berbatov, but only over the last week or so have they really stepped up their attempts to sign the Bulgarian hitman. Reports indicated the Red Devils had offered somewhere between ₤20million and ₤28million for the 27-year-old, although these claims have recently been smothered in the press. However, Ferguson revealed that United have in fact lodged a bid for the ex-Bayer Leverkusen man, who has established himself among the Premier League’s best attackers since arriving at White Hart Lane in 2006. “We have made Tottenham an offer on Berbatov and we have good expectations that this deal will go through,” the Scot said in The Sun. “Berbatov has been impressive during a long time and would be a great addition to our attack.”
No Stress
Ferguson is eager to add another dimension to his forward line, which currently boasts a wealth of deep-lying strikers, such as Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney, but no true centre-forward. Berbatov could prove an ideal solution, as his partnership with Robbie Keane at Spurs has produced no less than 91 goals over the past two seasons – not to mention a truckload of direct assists. Understandably, the Lilywhites are desperate to keep hold of the silky striker – especially considering Liverpool’s interest in Keane – and may hold out for more than ₤30million. But Ferguson is not concerned about such potential impediments, despite the fact the start of the domestic season (August 16) is drawing ever nearer. “I think time will work for us more than against us,” he added. “We will not stress this situation. “We are hoping to have a constructive conversation with Tottenham in the near future.”
