AVB rules out striker raid

Andre Villas-Boas says he won't be looking to sign a striker in January due to Chelsea's ability to get goals from a number of players.

The Blues chief was quizzed about his plans for the New Year with Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou set for a four-week absence if Ivory Coast go far in the African Nations Cup, while Nicolas Anelka is departing Stamford Bridge for Chinese outfit Shanghai Shenhua.

That will leave Villas-Boas with Fernando Torres, Daniel Sturridge and Romelu Lukaku as his only recognised strikers which has resulted in speculation linking the Portuguese tactician with the likes of Chilean star Eduardo Vargas, Real Madrid's Gonzalo Higuain and Napoli hitman Edinson Cavani.

However, when asked about his plans, the former Porto coach insisted that the ability of his current squad of players to share out the goals means a foray into the transfer market for a striker is not essential.

"Sometimes teams generate more goalscoring opportunities for certain people," Villas-Boas said.

"We are within Man City's range as the most attacking team.

"But we created for different players. That's why we have our goal sheet spread out through everybody, from (Frank) Lampard, to Sturridge, to Raul (Meireles), to (Juan) Mata.

"It's pretty diverse."
