After the summer exits of former Gunners Samir Nasri and Gael Clichy to the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott has expressed his admiration for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.
Speaking to The Sun, which printed an 'exclusive' today on City's plan for a £30m raid on the 28-year-old, England international Lescott said that the club would be delighted for the in-form Dutchman to join the fold.
"I wouldn't swap him for any of our strikers — but I'd take him as well," he told the tabloid at a promotional event for FIFA 12.
"We'd welcome any great players here and he is one. He's the man for Arsenal at the moment and he's obviously their main goal threat. He's right up there with the best strikers around.
"As a forward you get judged on goals so at the moment he's the best in the league. He can score all sorts of goals, with either foot. His work-rate for the team is great as well."
Lescott will get a closer look at Van Persie during tomorrow's highly anticipated clash between City and Arsenal, while Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has ruled out any January striker swoops.
Despite the risk of a knock to injury-prone Van Persie and the African Cup of Nations exits of Maroune Chamakh and Gervinho, Wenger has not publicly spoken of any potential transfer targets for the January transfer window, though Koln striker Lukas Podolski has been scouted in recent weeks.
