Manchester United defender Phil Jones has undergone knee surgery and will be sidelined for up to eight weeks.
Jones, 20, suffered a meniscus tear in training on Thursday and left Carrington on crutches.
Jones had only just returned to training after missing United’s first three games because of back spasms.
The England international is likely to miss seven Premier League games and three Champions League games.
A statement from the club read: “Phil Jones has had surgery on a knee meniscus tear sustained in training that will require six to eight weeks of rehabilitation.”
Jones joined United from Blackburn for £16.5million in January last year and has made 29 appearances for the club.
United have seen a succession of injuries to their centre-halves, but Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans both returned to the United squad for the 3-2 win at Southampton last weekend. Chris Smalling remains sidelined with a broken metatarsal.
