Damien Comolli has been relieved of his position as director of football at Liverpool.
The Frenchman oversaw a number of signings since the return of manager Kenny Dalglish, including the club record £35m capture of Andy Carroll from Newcastle.
He was also instrumental in the acquisition of Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson from Aston Villa and Sunderland respectively and Uruguay forward Luis Suarez from Ajax.
Comolli was brought in as director of football strategy in November 2010 but took up the role of director of football the following March, two months after the departure of former boss Roy Hodgson.
Liverpool chairman Tom Werner said: "We've had a strategy that we agreed on. There was some disconnect on the implementation of that.
"That strategy is a strong one and it will continue... but when it's time to act, we need to act.
"We're talking about the future, we have a strategy we need implemented and we felt Damien was probably not the right person to implement that strategy."
Comolli, who held a similar position at Tottenham, said: "I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to work at Liverpool.
"I am happy to move on from the club and back to France for family reasons. I wish the club all the best for the future."
The club have also confirmed that head of Sports Science and Medicine - Australian Peter Brukner - has also left the club.
