Manchester City blitzed West Brom to re-ignite the all-Manchester title race.
With leaders United inexplicably losing at Wigan – who had never beaten the Reds – City revitalised their bid to end a 44-year wait for title glory. United remain five points ahead of Roberto Mancini’s side and could still win the title at the Etihad, should both clubs each win their two games before the April 30 derby showdown. Following last night’s results – which lifted Wigan out of the Premier League drop zone for the first time since October – United will now have to win arguably the most important-ever derby – as well as the clashes with Aston Villa and Everton before it – to celebrate sealing their 20th title at the home of their biggest rivals. The Etihad atmosphere lifted dramatically as news of Shaun Maloney’s Wigan wonder-goal filtered through and realisation hit home that the title race was back on.
Despite the contrasting results, however, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men are still firm favourites to retain their crown. And Mancini agrees saying: “United have a fantastic team and I don’t think they can lose five points.’’ Sergio Aguero was twice on target along, with David Silva, for the revitalised Blues while Carlo Tevez’s first goal in 11 months was met by home fans chanting boss Mancini’s name, an indication the Argentine striker will have to do more if he’s to be forgiven completely. There was however warm applause for Tevez when he was replaced by Adam Johnson two minutes later. Salford bookie Fred Done, who has already paid out on United winning the league, said today: “I’m not losing any sleep just yet – the Reds will still win it.”
