Rooney my big mistake

Wayne Rooney admits handing in a transfer request two years ago was the biggest mistake of his career.

The Manchester United striker stunned boss Sir Alex Ferguson when he questioned the club's ability to attract top players with ambitions to match his own.

However, any rift between the duo was short-lived as he swiftly retracted the statement and signed a new five-year deal at Old Trafford.

In his latest autobiography, serialised in the Daily Mirror, Rooney says: "In September 2010 an ankle injury put me on the sidelines.

"I got frustrated with myself, my game, my injury and everything around me. I was stuck in a cycle of bad form and that's when I made the biggest mistake of my football career.

"I released a statement which publicly questioned my happiness at Old Trafford. Am I better off elsewhere?"

But he admitted his manager's opinion on the situation proved to be correct: "Sir Alex said the grass isn't always greener and he was right.

"He said 'Sometimes you look in a field and see a cow and think it's a better cow than the one you have in your own field.

"On reflection I liked what was in my field. I was wrong as United wanted the same as me... trophies, success and to be the best."
