Neymar off target in Recopa stalemate

Universidad de Chile and Santos could not be separated in a goalless first leg of the Recopa Sudamericana.

In the annual clash between the winners of the Copa Sudamericana and Copa Libertadores, Santos' Brazil striker Neymar had the most obvious choice to score but missed a penalty. It came in the 16th minute when Neymar was fouled by Sebastian Martinez and referee Nestor Pitana pointed to the spot.

Neymar fired over the crossbar from 12 yards. Copa Libertadores champion Santos looked to test goalkeeper Rafael from long distance repeatedly but rarely caused him trouble.

They had another late chance, again for Neymar who hit the bar two minutes from the end. The second leg takes place at the Estadio Pacaembu in Sao Paulo on 26 September.

Universidad de Chile midfielder Charles Aranguiz told Fox Sports it was not an easy game for the Copa Sudamericana winners. "It was very tough," he said. "Santos have great players, big forwards, so we should be careful. Both teams have opportunities. There are 90 minutes left."

Santos' Argentinian forward Ezequiel Miralles, who came in for Andre Felipe in the second half, said: "Our first half was better than the second. If we had scored the penalty, it would have been a completely different match because Universidad would have gone for the equaliser. Not losing is important."
