Jose Mourinho would have to pay Real Madrid an eyewatering 20 million euros compensation if he quits in June.
The former Chelsea manager has come under increasing pressure of late, despite league form which has seen Real pull out a five-point gap at the top of the table.
And after the Real fans started booing him at the weekend, highly-respected Spanish football journalist Siro Lopez claimed that that the Special One has already decided to quit the club at the end of the season. That speculation only increased after the transcript of a training ground bust-up between Mourinho and star players Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas made its way into print, while Real Madrid's loss in the Copa del Rey Clasico against Barcelona on Wednesday night only made things worse again.
But Lopez's newspaper AS has now reported that Mourinho will have to pay his employers an incredible 20 million euros - or two years' salary - if he walks out on them.
The contractual clause cuts both ways, however: should Mourinho's employers axe the Portuguese coach for his apparent inability to get the better of Barcelona, they would have to pay him the same amount.
AS's report adds that the penalty probably lay behind Mourinho's cryptic statement the other day about : "(Real Madrid chiefs) Florentino (Perez) and Jose Angel Sanchez know that they are not going to have any trouble from me."
The fine effectively rules out Mourinho quitting or being poached, since probably the only clubs in the world who could afford to pay the 20 million penalty to secure the Special One's services are clubs whose managers are either too recently-installed (Chelsea, Paris St Germain) or too successful (Manchester United, Manchester City) to contemplate a change.
Yet that does not necessarily mean that Mourinho will still be in charge of the club next season: if Mourinho still wants to go, and Real want to let him, the 20 million fee can reportedly be waived by mutual agreement.
