Liverpool FC to launch late bid for Jermain Defoe?

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to make a late swoop to sign Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish on Monday insisted that he would not look to buy or sell any players before the January transfer window closes on Tuesday night, but speaking prior to Tuesday night's Premier League game at Wolverhampton, Wolves boss Mick McCarthy revealed that the Scot wanted to delay the game to avoid a clash with transfer deadline day.

McCarthy suggested that Dalglish could be - or at least was - looking to do some last-minute transfer business.

And according to the Daily Express, the Reds could be set to launch a late bid for Defoe.

The 29-year-old was linked with a move to Anfield earlier in the month.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has preferred to start with on-loan Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor up front this season, leading to speculation that Defoe could leave White Hart Lane this month.

Redknapp admitted earlier this month that there has been interest in Defoe, but insisted: "We are not selling him. He [his agent] is saying this club wants him and that club wants him – that is how they make their money.

"He is not moving anywhere, though. He is on contract here and is a big player for us."

Defoe recently teamed up with a new agent, Struan Marshall, who already represents Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, along with Anfield team-mates Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson, who both completed moves to Merseyside last summer.

The January transfer window closes at 23:00 GMT on Tuesday.
