Gareth Barry ruled out of Euro 2012

Manchester City and England midfielder Gareth Barry will miss out on a place at Euro 2012 due to injury.

Everton defender Phil Jagielka, who was on the stand-by list, has been called up as a replacement for Barry. Jagielka has been drafted in ahead of Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson, who was also one of the selected back-ups.

Barry limped out of Saturday's 1-0 friendly victory over Norway with a lower abdomen problem, and a scan has confirmed England boss Roy Hodgson's worst fears over the player.

Barry, who played an integral role as Manchester City claimed the Premier League title this season, has 53 caps for England and could well have been a first-choice pick if fully fit.

Hodgson said: "I'm very disappointed to lose Gareth, not only was he a member of my original 23-man squad but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years.

"I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament but I'm sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros. I wish him a speedy recovery."

The decision to include Jagielka hints that versatile Manchester United youngster Phil Jones will be asked to fill in as a central midfielder, where he has appeared for his club, in case of emergency.

Jagielka found himself behind John Heitinga and Sylvain Distin in the pecking order for Everton towards the end of the season. The centre back has picked up 11 caps for his country.
