Mancini plays down Bale link

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has rejected media reports linking Tottenham's Gareth Bale with a move to the Etihad Stadium.

The left-sided midfielder has been in dazzling form this season but admitted last week he would have to reconsider his future at Spurs if they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

City are one of several clubs, including Barcelona and Inter Milan, believed to be waiting to jump if the 22-year-old showed any inclination to leave White Hart Lane.

However, Mancini insisted: "Gareth Bale is a fantastic player. But I don't think he will leave a big team like Tottenham."

The Italian boss said any discussions with the club's owners on player recruitment during the summer were on hold as they geared their efforts towards the final stretch in the Premier League title race.

"We talked about this some weeks ago," added Mancini, whose table-topping team are ahead of neighbours United on goal difference with matches against Newcastle and QPR still remaining.

"But now our focus has to be on the next two games."
