Liverpool FC striker Luis Suarez issues apology for Patrice Evra snub

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has issued an apology following his refusal to shake hands with Manchester United captain Patrice Evra on Saturday.

Most of the pre-match build-up had been whether the two players would shake hands before kick-off but, after Evra offered his hand, Suarez ignored the gesture.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish - who after the match told Sky Sports that he was unaware of the pre-match snub - had insisted during the week that the Uruguay international would shake hands with the left-back.

In a statement posted on the club's official website on Sunday, Suarez said: "I have spoken with the Manager since the game at Old Trafford and I realise I got things wrong.

"I've not only let him down, but also the Club and what it stands for and I'm sorry. I made a mistake and I regret what happened.

"I should have shaken Patrice Evra's hand before the game and I want to apologise for my actions.

"I would like to put this whole issue behind me and concentrate on playing football."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson on Saturday called Suarez a "disgrace" and said he should never play for the club again.

Speaking after the match, the Scot said: "I could not believe it, I just could not believe it.

"He's a disgrace to Liverpool Football Club, that certain player should not be allowed to play for Liverpool again.

"The history that club's got and he does that and in a situation like today could have caused a riot.

"I was really disappointed in that guy, it was terrible what he did."

United won the game 2-1.
