Robin van Persie caught in tug-of-war between Real Madrid and Barcelona

Arsenal forward Robin van Persie has emerged as a transfer target for both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The 28-year-old Dutch international has repeatedly stressed his commitment to the Arsenal cause, but has refused to enter into negotiations over a new contract at the Emirates until the end of the current campaign.

This will leave him with just a year left on his existing deal - a situation identical to the one which Gunners boss Arsene Wenger says forced him to sell Samir Nasri to Manchester City in August.

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have both been alerted to Van Persie's potential availability in the summer, and both are now planning to test the water with substantial bids.

Barcelona are understood to have made the player their number one target, although club vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu has been non-committal, saying: 'There is nothing going on at the moment. There are some rumours, but this is not the right time to talk about Van Persie.

'We have to focus on our performances on the pitch.'

Meanwhile, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is reportedly keen on bringing in Manchester City's Argentine striker Sergio Aguero, but coach Jose Mourinho believes that Van Persie will be a better fit, as well as a more affordable option.

Real would likely have to offload one of either Karim Benzema or Gonzalo Higuain, who's been trailed by Chelsea, should they wish to bring in the Arsenal striker.
